Title of thesis: ”How and why Danish migrants and their descendants have maintained ethnic self-perceptions and life practices in the USA and Australia.”
04.09.2018 kl. 13.00 - 15.00
As part of the joint research project MiClue, this PhD project explores the legacies of two cases of Danish emigration. The one concerns the legacy of Danish emigration to the USA from 1850-1920. The other concerns a post-World War 2 case of Danish emigration to Australia, roughly from 1960-1990. The project is based on a number of biographical narrative interviews collected on field trips to both the USA and Australia, with migrants and their descendants – in the USA as far as to the fifth generation. Interviewing more generations within the same family has revealed mechanisms of intergenerational transmission, thus allowing for the study of how and why ethnic self-perceptions and life practices are maintained through the generations. The project include a deeper scrutiny of developments in ethnic identities, practices, belonging, and safeguarding; the meaning of interethnic marriages, ethnic status, religion and the importance of ‘place’ in acculturation processes.
The pre-defence starts with a presentation by Pernille Skovgaard Christensen followed by the discussant's comments and an open discussion. The pre-defence will be in English.
