Title: How (not) to Be Friends? Friendship Across the Difference in Youth Social Practice and Danish Public Concern about Integration
06.06.2018 kl. 10.15 - 06.06.2018 kl. 12.00
How (not) to Be Friends? Friendship Across the Difference in Youth Social Practice and Danish Public Concern about Integration, is an ethnographic analysis of friendship relations among ethnically minoritized and majoritized pupils in Danish secondary school and youth activity clubs. Mantės thesis examines how friendships are situated in processes of racialization and in which ways friendship becomes a performative idiom that delineates the affective boundaries between similarity and difference, inclusion and exclusion. This research shows how young people’s friendships are never simply their own when questions such as 'Why are Muslims not friends with Danes?’, ‘Can they be friends?’, and ‘Should they be friends?’ are discursively figured as matters of public concern. Framed through the politics of intimacy, Mantė analyzes how ‘friendship’ becomes a technology of control and concern about ‘integration’ that is simultaneously recruited toward the possibility of transformative social change. Mantės’ PhD is part of the Velux-funded research project A Study into Experiences and Resistance to Racialization in Denmark (SERR).
Please register for the event to Marianne Høgsbro no later than 31 May 2018.
