Title of thesis: The Rise of China and Global Governance: Conceptualizing and Interpreting “International Leadership with Chinese Characteristics”
10.09.2018 kl. 10.00 - 12.00
Regarding the relationship between the rise of China and the existing international order and global governance, the PhD project intends to provide a China-based IR perspective and conceptualize the “international leadership with Chinese characteristics” as a complementary analytical framework to the Western-based IR paradigms. The project argues that the conceptualization of the “international leadership with Chinese characteristics”is co-shaped by Chinese cultural legacies and philosophical thoughts, China’s involvement in and contribution to the process and architecture of global governance, and China’s understanding and perception of international situation and other countries’ role expectations. In this respect, on the one hand, relational theory, based on Chinese cultural and political thoughts, is applied to redefining the key components (power, interest, vision) of international leadership through the logic of relationality/guanxi and then to conceptualizing the “international leadership with Chinese characteristics” in terms of facilitative leadership, constructive leadership, and exemplary leadership. On the other hand, role theory, consisting of national role conceptions (NRCs) and national role performance (NRP), is applied to providing empirical analysis (verifying or falsifying) of the proposed “international leadership with Chinese characteristics”. Empirically, the “international leadership with Chinese characteristics” is interpreted through the analysis of Chinese leaders’ and decision makers’ speeches and statements, the investigation of China’s policy making and external behavior, and the insights provided by interviews with relevant scholars and pundits. By doing so, the major contribution of the project is to provide a holistic picture of the rise of China and to identify China’s role in the transformation of global governance.
